Drop shipping is a very popular form of e commerce because it doesn’t require much, if any up front investment. Since you have no inventory costs, your risk is minimized. This makes it a great opportunity for those with a small startup budget. Unfortunately, it also has its drawbacks. Since you have no control over the inventory, you’re completely relying on your drop shipper. This leads to a whole set of problems. This article will discuss these problems and show you how drop shipping ebay works.
First off, don’t expect to just list items for sale on eBay and make a bunch of money. eBay is extremely competitive and charges a lot of fees to list and sell products. You’ll need large margins to make any money here. You’ll also need quality and unique products with vivid, detailed product descriptions and images. Going to Doba and uploading their catalog to eBay doesn’t work anymore. The problem with using a popular drop shipping service is that everybody uses them. If you found your source on the first few pages of Google, you can be sure your competitors did too. That means you’ll have thousands of others selling the same products for the same price. You have no competitive advantage.
The other problem with using a common source is the dreaded out of stock issue. When you use a popular drop ship source, there will be thousands of others selling the same products as you, especially the popular ones. That means that those popular items are likely to go out of stock at any time. If you sell an item on eBay and then go to your drop shipper and find out its out of stock, you’re in trouble. You’ll get negative feedback and possibly banned from selling on eBay. eBay buyers do not take kindly to drop shippers.
Your best bet is to use other ways of finding your wholesale source. Be sure you’re dealing with a legitimate manufacturer or drop shipper. If they charge monthly fees, they are not a real wholesale company. A real wholesale drop ship company will not sell you anything other than wholesale merchandise. They also will not sell you goods without providing them a tax ID and resale certificate. If they don’t ask for this, you’re not getting real wholesale pricing. Spend a little extra time finding a quality drop shipping source and you will have a lot more luck drop shipping eBay. You’ll still be taking a risk, but it will be much lower.
Its also recommended that you don’t rely completely on ebay for your business. There are thousands of other great places you can list and sell products all over the web. Many of them are free, leaving you with much bigger profit margins. It’s important to diversify and have a good marketing plan before you enter any business, including drop shipping. A little extra effort up front will pay off big time down the road. You can make big profits drop shipping, even on eBay, but it will require that you think outside the box. The most convenient solution is rarely the best one. |
